How to Get Your First Credit Card in India (Even With No Income Proof)

The Credit Card Catch-22

To get a credit card, banks want you to have credit history. But to have credit history, you need a credit card. This circular problem stops millions of Indians from accessing credit.

Here is how to break the cycle.

Path 1: Kotak 811 DreamDifferent (No Income Proof Required)

Kotak 811 is the easiest credit card to get in India. Requirements: just a valid PAN and Aadhaar. No income proof, no salary slips, no ITR. It can even be issued against a fixed deposit.

Strategy: Get this card, use it for small purchases every month, pay the full bill on time. After 6-12 months, you have credit history and can apply for better cards.

Path 2: Secured Credit Card Against FD

Many banks offer credit cards against a Fixed Deposit. You deposit ₹10,000-50,000 as FD, and the bank issues a credit card with a limit equal to 80-90% of the FD. Zero risk to the bank, easy approval for you.

Best options: SBI Advantage Plus, Axis Bank Insta Easy, ICICI Bank Instant Platinum.

Path 3: Amazon Pay ICICI (Low Income Requirement)

If you earn ₹20,000+ per month, Amazon Pay ICICI often approves applications even without extensive credit history. Lifetime free card, 5% cashback on Amazon. Apply via Amazon's website — the process is fast and digital.

After Getting Your First Card

Follow these three rules:

1. Never spend more than 30% of your credit limit in a month

2. Always pay the full outstanding amount, not just the minimum

3. Never miss a payment due date

After 12 months of this, your CIBIL score will be 700+ and most cards will be available to you.

The Timeline

Month 1-12: Kotak 811 or secured card, build credit history

Month 12-18: Apply for Amazon Pay ICICI or HDFC MoneyBack+

Month 18-36: Apply for HDFC Millennia or Axis ACE

Month 36+: Premium cards become accessible
